I don't think nothing is wrong with that fact, really.  Well...for me, I believe I had been a furry all of my life, though it was only a few years ago, I had a true concept into the idea that I had been. Of  course, once the concept of the computer was invited into my life, I seemed to find out about so much more on the furries than I ever had...More extensively, the art..I didn't grasp the community until about two years ago, actually...Right now I'm 17, and I think that most teens find the fandom when they are teens because we are possibly one of the most comforting fandoms out there...I had always wanted someone to be there with and for me all the time, and never really got that comfort until I went into the fandom...Its like a haven, of sorts for someone who needs or wants to b e with others like themself...So it's really natural for most people to 'become' furries when they are teens... As I have already stated, I don't think there is anything unusual with the influx of teens.

In fact, if you think about it... that is the way it should be.  Whether it be sports, dancing, woodworking, art, etc. interests generally start when one is young.  So an interest in furdom would also start when one is young.

It would be more unusual to have a lot of older folks suddenly discover their furside.  Though not impossible, few folks in their 40s or 50s wake up and say, "you know, today I am going to start painting."  Unless it is referring to the house.  '<img'>

Obsolete furspeak?  Great now I have to worry about using old terms!  Will pull out all my 8-track tapes, vinyl records and laserdiscs to see if they have more modern words.

Hey, I'm a teen too you know! (I'm 16)

I suppose it was to do with a multitude of things, mainly the CSI episode and having the internet in my own bedroom ^_^

What also helped was the fact that I ADORE animals, anime/manga and animations (disney, etc.) and a poster in another forum, (gametalk.com) called "A Foxful Afternoon".

I think it will be a fad for some. In the teen years it is easier to get sucked in by something, think its wicked cool, then loose intrest in a few months.
Also slight downside of so many teens is alot of immaturity and alot of angst. We all went through it, but still....vast number of angst can make a 'fandom' look even worse.

hmmm, for me, when I very first got the internet in 1999, I was 12, and the first "hangout" I had online was this place called Skagit Valley, an old BeSeen chat room my step brother introduced me to, where we roleplayed all kinds of things, from (non-anthro) wolves to dragons to even humans.  Anything was welcome, it was very fun and one of the best times I ever had, when the internet was so fresh and new and amazing to me.

The very first "furry" stuff I ever saw was from there, a girl had an "avatar" (kind of like an avatar here or any other forum but in BeSeen chatrooms they could be huge in size) of a nude, but fur-covering-the-parts, squirrel girl.  At first it was a bit shocking, but I looked at it again and realised "hey... I kinda like this".  From then on I saw more and more furry art and ended up finding some sites and, long story short, even though Skagit (later known as Sinlahekin) died off in about 2001 or so I went on to look at tons and tons of all kinds of furry art for the next several years.  I was a big fan, but a complete lurker, and though I got fancies to join in furry MUCKs or RP"s and such I never really did.

It was earlier this year that I suddenly got back into old cartoons I grew up with like Tiny Toons and Animaniacs and such (and those cartoons, especially with characters like Minerva Mink and Fifi LaFume, plus video game and etc. influence, probably triggered this furry fascination of mine from an EXTREMELY young age), and then ended up playing and beating and absolutely loving the Sly Cooper trilogy of video games (stars a furry raccoon for those who don't know), next thing I know I catch wind of Star Fox DS and get back into THAT, I had a realization that I actually find fursuits cool after years of thinking they were ridiculous, ba-da-bing ba-da-bang, I'm at fchan making a post about "I think I'm becoming a furry, help" basically.  Just a few days ago.

I've come leagues ahead since then, and I'm still seeking to go deeper into the fandom; you could more or less go ahead and call me a furry. I'm 19 now so I could technically be qualified as "teen" , and if certain things had gone smoother, I'd have most likely been one years ago.

So yeah, it's the Internet, it's awesome video games that star furry characters, it's movies like Robin Hood and shows like Looney/Tiny Toons (and almost any other good old cartoon) and Animaniacs that lots of kids who are currently qualified as "teens" grew up with, it's characters like Minerva and Krystal in such entertainment franchises that kids are prone to get crushes on and whatnot, that's tons of things pushing younger people nowadays into the fandom.

Now if only cartoons were as good as they were when I was growing up ':p'

I'd say it's the internet. Furry is a predominently online community. More internet means more furry exposure.

I'm a furry teen. 16 years of age and know a couple of teen furries.  Didn't know I was a furry until recently though.

I remember coming into the fandom about 8 months before the whole MTV thing came out.  Didnt even know about the Vanity Fair article that came before MTV.

When I came in I didnt notice as many teen furs as there are today.  Has it become a trend?  Will we see furry stuff at Hot Topic?

In a way, I kind of hope not.  Furry for me is a lifestyle for me (I have always been into pretending to be a cat and drawing animal/human hybrids) as well as an artistic outlet, a big part of my costuming influence and yes, a fetish.  For these teens, I dont know if they will still be around after the "novelty" wears off.  Some will stay but many will move on to the next good thing if this truly is a "trend".

No way furry stuff will end up in Hot Topic for two resons, one, more then likely the fandom will stay small, too small to make money off of, and two, when people actually DO know what furries    are, they're generally looked down on.

If they do start marketing off of us, I'm going to be really disappointed.

Now that I look back at my life, I acted like I was a furry when I was little, too. I used to pretend to be random animals and play with my stuffed toys and hang on my Fisher Price jungle gym like it was my 'den'. I guess I never really grew out of it like most five year old kids do. I just found out about the fandom a few years ago and slowly got into it.

As for the Hot Topic thing, I have a feeling that it's not going to happen. I have seen cat ear bands there and this adorable Care Bear hoodie with bear ears on the hood, but I don't think they're trying to promote the fandom. Of course, you never know. ^^

There have beenb A LOT of teen furs recently.  I have been a fur since I was 12 though.  Long times for me, Nya.

I never really had a chanced to truely embrass being a Fur until this year.  I don't think the teems will really know if they truely are a part of the fandom or not untill they get out of HS.

Down that I can drive and go to cons with out having to care about mom or dad, it is soo much easier to be a fur.  Plus dad no longer cares, and mom loves my fandom!!  ehehe

Defenitly the Internet. Speaking from experience, if a scared, confused teenager can find someone else who is going through the same thing to talk about it, and can still remain anonymous while at it, he or she will probably not try to stifle their 'furriness'.

I discovered my furry side a few years ago...I knew that it was unusual to be attracted to furry female characters (Maid Marien, for example) than to humans. But I never knew what my 'symptom' was, if you get my meaning.
It's just the way I've been wired from when I was little - the average furry is prettier/cuter/hotter than an average human girl!

It helps so much to talk with people who are like me and won't either insult, ignore, or send me to a shrink or the local funny farm, because even the smallest insult to a teen -can feel like a gut punch- at the wrong moment. That is probably it in a nutshell.

i came into the fandom at 14, because through some random browsing, i found the work of one fairly well known furry artist, admired it and went, "wow. hello. here's what i love to draw."

hehe and when i was little i used to pretend i was a dog, and would insist my mom set down a bowl for me too, one of food and water (she made believe and the tile square worked) and i even tried dog food when i was very very young.

but i can't remember why or how i got into it. just that something in my brain clicked when i saw that artist's work.

i'm seventeen now, for a reference, and i'd say that i'm going to keep this up. as soon as i'm old enough, i'm going to try to go to Anthrocon and am already looking about buying a tail.

i wouldn't say teens coming into it is a bad thing, as someone pointed out, it's a time in your life when you're figuring yourself out, and what things mean to you, and seeing the furry art and whatnot online can really make people realize that that's a part of themselves, which is what happened to me.

I began as one of those Lycanthropy people ahving seen a show about werewolves and i was like 'thats me.' But as I read into it was very boring. While I was looking for more to read online I came across Furrys I was like 'what hte heck is that' I look it up and I die, figurativly. The art is gorgeous and right up my alley. This is what I had been looking for in my wanderings through witchccraft, wicca, and werewolves. Furry is me. It also provided an outlet for my creative side in drawings (however bad) and my all time favorite hobby of sewing. I have a bazillion sets of ears and a couple tails. I am 16 now and started searching for my furriness when i was around 11-12

Well i am 18 and i learned about furry through ranting-gryhphon.com. I've known about it since i was 16 but never really "knew" about it. I think the internet has helped many different idea or lifestyles grow because it gets information out there for all to see. I was also talking to 2 about something how you kinda discover your a fur and not decided to be one.

I'm a furry teen, but I didn't come into it because it was a trend. In truth, I stayed in the closet about it for the longest time because I knew the reputation that would come along with it. In recent years, though, I came out (thanks to some supportive words from furs I met in my area, who've been in the fandom for quiet a while) and have enjoyed life more than ever.

Though I didn't join because it was a trend, I'm sure many have--mostly younger artists on the extremly popular art sites (deviantart, sheezyart, side7--not ones dedicated solely to fur art). And chances are, they'll stick to those sites and not get so "into" the trend to join forums like this one.

(As a side note, I'm not pointing to anyone here, so please don't become insulted. I'm just generalizing about other sites.)

I'm also a Teen Fur (15, wishing he was 16), and found out about the fur fandom when I was 14 through a school project (weird huh?)
It was only recently I've begun to refine myself and carve out a namesake and fusona.
And as for why there seem to be more, I think it might be a bit related to biology. our teen years is when we really start to unwind and discover ouselves, like what wwe truly will be in the world, what sexual orinetation we will be, etc. I think Being a fur could be one of them. we just get attracted to them durring our teen years more than anything else. plus the interent is a good way to stay anonamous, but let people know your a fur. I know not many people who I know in RL know I'm a fur, (only my closest friends and another fur fan in my school) but in the interet, there are thousands who know about me ebing a fur. so interent is making more come out.
