Tech nerd furs
« on: December 01, 2010, 11:06:16 pm »
Hay everyone, i brand new and just joined yesterday greetings!

Just wondering if anyone else in this forum is of the extreme tech nerd/pc gamer type and if it ties in with your furrieness. I am a super tech nerd and my fursona is somewhat of a cyborg.

I am in computer engineering, and I eventually plan on getting multiple doctorates (comp eng and bio eng) and working on cybernetic interfaces.  :D
I'd also like to make my fusion reactor and preventative cure for cancer some time too >.> (No really, I do have those, on paper)

While I am not too pleased that you decided to group "extreme tech nerds" and "extreme PC gamers" together (I would much rather spend my time creating new things than blow it on endless hours of gaming), I do consider myself to be a pretty through and through techie nerd.  My more tech-oriented interests include collecting and learning how to use vintage computer systems, computer programming, soldering electronics, building animatronic robots, amateur radio (I have an Amateur Extra-Class license), going to hamfests, vintage computer fairs, classic video game conventions, and science fiction conventions, and I secretly hope that someday artificial intelligence technology will advance to the point where we can have furry AI constructs kind of like a furry-version of the character "Cortana" from the video game Halo, or "Renamon" from the third season of Digimon.  I also have a bit of an obsession with supercomputers and currently run a two-node Silicon Graphics Origin 300 system in my basement.  My "persona" is actually that of a bionic human mad scientist, and not a furry, so that reflects my techie-side as well.

As far as how my techie side relates to my furriness, I once spoke as a panelist on several fursuit construction panels at Midwest Furfest to give pointers on how to add animatronics to fursuits.  In addition, years ago for college I created an interactive animated arctic blue fox cartoon character named "Foxee" that used Microsoft Agent 2.0 technology to interact with visitors to her website.  I also keep on hoping that one day I will be able to get the chance to combine my programming skills and my artistic skills so that I can create an elaborate furry video game that I have been fleshing-out on paper for years.  Other than that, my techie side really only serves in helping me to bore my furry friends to tears by driving me to tell them about what obscure computer technology has captivated my interest on that particular day.  Most of my friends in the fandom are not hard-core computer enthusiasts, so I have to really tone down that side of me around them and save it for when I am with a more tech friendly crowd such as when I am at my vintage computer fairs.  At the same time none of my vintage computer fair friends are all that interested in anthropomorphic vixens like I am, so if I want to talk about how great those lovely creatures are I have to go hang out with my furry friends.  So between the groups that I participate in everything eventually balances out!   :D

*did not read anything beyond the title till just now*

I suppose the extreme gamer crowd *might* be related in that they would generally need to know the hardware, but then again, the simple fact there are those over-priced "high-end" systems states otherwise >.>

Anyways, I suppose it ties into my furriness in that my general knowledge of technology seems to result in everyone being at least somewhat techsavvy in most of the fictional worlds I create.

Eh...it depends. I can keep up with tech topics that interests me and I do a fair bit of reading on things such as upcomming computer tech and controversal experiments. But it doesn't mean I devote my life to it. I dunno how many furry tech nerds weight train. :p I remember seeing the stereotypical skinny as a twig nerd try to bench before back during my highschool days. He couldn't even bench a bare bar...that was...incredibly sad... Remember kids, step away from the computer every once and awhile! :o :D My real ambition is to do something with my creativity. Working on an ongoing story that has been going on for a few years and also considering other, more smaller things like maybe comic syndication. Do you have any idea how old and boring comic strips are in the papers these days? I could do better blindfolded...

Avan, for some reason I'd like to picture you lifting old heavy CRTs and the like as weights. :D I know you mean free weights, but old PC equipment is just that much more amusing.

Actually I was getting quite a work out with those old eMacs (NOT emacs, I mean the apple macs) when I volunteered to help my former teacher there replace all of them at the middle school with new PC's last year. :D

I'd much rather be creating things too. (or doing my homework) but i occasionally get sucked into BFBC2. I tend to buy/play games based on the technical aspect (built my PC pretty much because i wanted to see the graphics on crysis :D) and haven't focused much on the gameplay or stats as much as the physics, engine efficiency, and AI. This is why i grouped tech nerd and gamer together. Other than my interests in computer science (in the field of gaming) and the hardware involved, I also like the idea of cybernetics and electronic prosthetics like Iron Man and the Borg. right now i'm mostly focusing on my old school's robotics team of 4th graders, helping them get their lego robots up and running (while drawing on a really nifty tablet pc that one of the kid's parents has :)) I also like the world of steampunk and have so far made a bionic eye patch out of some velcrow, 2 floppy drives, and an LED and also have a habit of wearing welding goggles as sun glasses because their really steampunk-ish.

I have a matching set of Mac SEs somewhere in storage. Now those would make some super-geeky weights.  :D

How can you have rage without a MAC vs. PC war?  :o

Not extreme, but I am working on my own homebrew 3D video game, so I guess that counts as something. I enjoy working with 3D stuff in general, actually. It doesn't really tie in with any furry-related things though. Yet, anyways.
