I heard about it earlier in the day Sunday. Really hope they catch who ever is responsible for this. Has anyone heard about the one person not released right away from the hospital?

It seems that if the gas was in its purest form it would've killed, chlorine gas CAN BE used as a chemical weapon and it has been in the past, it suffocates the victims then eats away at the mucous membrane in the lungs, forming liquid,it then drowns the victim from the inside also causes irritation to eyes,if used in high quantities. it could've been deadly in its purest form  clearly it wasn't, they're lucky nobody got seriously injured. (Also I looked up this info.)

It could have been crushed up chlorine tablets for disinfecting bathrooms and showers.

I had to go to hospital once after becoming ill when a campmate renowned for not being the cleverest in the world tried cleaning the shower block with far too many chlorine tablets and bleach mixed with water in a mop bucket at camp with cadets...as the seniors in charge of the blocks we quickly cleaned it up but yeesh!....

:P

I'm glad that nobody was seriously hurt. Anybody think that it might have been someone anti furry? Or just someone being dumb?

I hope they find the individual responsible for this, and that there is no-lasting damage to any of the attendees.

I've been posting updates in the MFF thread about it for the last 2 nights ;). I'll copy-paste my writeup though.

Saturday night at around 1:30 AM (so technically sunday), a fire alarm went off. We thought it was a drunk guy until we stepped outside the room and found that the entire hotel reeked of chlorine.

Several thousand people evacuated the hotel. Ambulances, firetrucks, and even a news team were already there. We saw people outside the hotel coping with it in a lot of different ways, with most just trying to stay positive. Some weren't taking it nearly as well. Some were crying, one guy punched a dumpster really hard, with a wind-up to it and everything.

We walked over to the Hilton across the street and they were very accommodating to the several-hundred of us looking for warmth. Some people were literally just wearing bathrobes. The head of security opened up a couple of the ballrooms for us to just sit and wait.

At some point, I called my dad and asked if he could drive out and pick us up. We spent the night at my house, then went back. We had a bit of a scare, but things were business as usual Sunday morning. All we can do is take these things in stride and continue on, regardless of the who or why.

The details of the chlorine-bomb are in all the articles.
Just wanted to let you all know my personal experience.

And people think Furries are the sick ones? This person who did the chlorine thing could have killed someone, and thankfully no one was killed or seriously injured. They catch the guy i'd love to see how they defend their actions. But good to see the convention carried on.

A big hotel would likely have Chlorine treatment equipment for a swimming pool or for
cleaning purposes. So a release of Chlorine fumes or gas could be accidental.

I hope it turns out to be an accident, if not I hope those responsible are caught.

It was intentionally done.  There's not a pool at the hotel, and police found a broken plain glass jar in the stairwell.

My hotel room was four doors down from the affected stairwell.  My husband and I were asleep and I woke up because of the strong smell.  The weird part was the silence--there wasn't a single sound aside from a weird beeping noise outside my door, and when I checked to see what it was it turned out to be a fireman wearing breathing gear.  He told me to close the door and open all the windows, but our room had none that could be opened.  After calling the front desk to see what was happening I woke my husband, grabbed what we could, got out, and that's when the alarms went off.  Luckily a hotel shuttle bus was right where we were and the driver let us sit in there for the entire three-hour ordeal.  Afterwards my husband and I just decided to go home since we're local.

I called the hotel today to finish some business I didn't get a chance to deal with because of the situation, but was glad to find out that they may have some info as to who did it.

Over the years, furries have always been worried about being "in the news". Well, this incident really put a big spotlight on us........and not in a good way.  >:( I'll second my comments from the convention thread that I hope the authorities find the person responsible and prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.  >:(

Shim, do you have a link to that MFF thread? I'm curious to read more.

Chlorine powder

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calcium_hypochlorite

If this really was intentional as authorities say, I'd be more curious about why this was done instead of who did it.
Was it a prank gone wrong?
Was it a furry hater?
Group of people or an individual?
.........and so many other questions I have. But, we'll all have to be patient as the authorities do their investigation and hopefully provide some answers. Spreading rumors, half truths, etc. won't help anything.

Though I can't help but think on the following..........as has been stated, the authorities believe this was an intentional act. With that being said, it's possible the authorities could classify this as a "chemical attack". I would not rule out that possibility. Chlorine powder is not something to be taken lightly.

I actually don't think it's that bad a thing at all, as far as the spotlight is concerned. Frankly, these are some of the most neutral articles toward the fandom I've ever seen, largely because the focus isn't "hey, look at these weirdos." One of the first articles on the whole ordeal was in the Chicago Tribune, and they used a pretty good description (taken largely from the MFF site itself), and this same thing was pretty much copied into every article I've seen about it.

Quote
Midwest FurFest bills itself as a convention that celebrates "art, literature, and performance based around anthropomorphic animals."

I fail to see how this is inherently a bad reflection on the fandom as a whole. Sure, it's getting us some attention, but actually in a bit of a sympathetic light. We were trending as high as #2 in the US on both Twitter and Facebook. And most comments I've read have been at worst "I don't get these people, but I do hope they're all okay."

I read about this in the Chicago Sun-Times, as well as on Yahoo! news. Both articles were pretty neutral, but I was pleasantly surprised by how many people defended furries in the comments on Yahoo. Yeah, people made "Fur and Loathing" references and called us sick, but the commenters on that site are overwhelmingly... opinionated, in a way that would cause them to dislike furries. The folks who stood up were reasonably pleasant and equitable. If this chlorine thing brings attention to the fandom, it'll be fleeting, but not negative. It's terrible that this happened, and anyone trying to spin this as "wow, look at those sickos" is obviously just a terrible journalist and possibly a bad person.
Whenever I see these signatures, I feel like I should use mine to say something really interesting and profound, but I always end up with some generic quote or saying. Hmm. That's unfortunate. Well, now guess who looks like a excessively meta killjoy. I do!

A half-page of newsprint was dedicated to this story in The Midland Daily News in Midland, MI which is the home of the Dow Chemical Company. Midland only has a small furry component btw.

On the lighter side of things. I ran across this.

Funny and supportive.

I've ran across more supportive things than trolls. People may not like, understand or have the wrong impression of us. But no one want's to see people getting  hurt.

My friend told me about the incident shortly on the 8th (I was at a separate convention on the 7th, so I was unaware of what was happening at MFF). My heart and thoughts go out to those who were in the hotel when it happened.

This is absolutely terrible. I haven't heard anything about this till I read the thread. I wasn't able to see the news too. Too bad for the casualties. Whoever the suspects may be, they should be punished and I myself will throw them sculpted buffalo skulls from http://skullbliss.com/. LOL.

This is terrible, I really hope those of you who went to MFF are doing well...and that those who were hospitalized will be okay. Perhaps more security will be enforced at cons now due to this incident? Just awful all around.  >:(

a few days ago when i brought this up to my mom (who knows im a furry) my brother said it was pretty funny.... i asked him how he could find it funny if he is a furry which he responded that he can make fun of, or laugh at things in his own interest.

that is really sick of my brother.... and knowing him he most likely is stalking me on all my accounts, and will see this post. complete evasion of privacy.... well im going to wait till he attempts to beat me up.

I think there's nothing wrong with finding the humor in a situation, especially after the dust settles on something like this where we know nobody was seriously hurt. Heck, even on Sunday at the con there were people lightly joking about it. And really, at that point, what else can you do? I've seen some artwork people got at the con on Sunday after all that went down, and they were having gas masks and stuff like that put on their character.

Was the whole ordeal scary when it was happening? Of course. Any time you're evacuated from an event and see that many emergency vehicles lining up outside the building, you know it's a big deal. But we all made it through it. It was actually neat to see that a lot of people made the best of the situation that they could, rather than outright panicking or being angry.

In my opinion, it's a waste of energy to be outright angry at something like this. I want to see whoever did it caught and brought to justice as much as the next guy, but being angry about it won't make them find the person any faster.

sorry messed up while typing my post, the part that he found funny was how people were sent to the hospital and some were possibly injured. he always finds it funny when ever someone could be seriously injured
