Once again forests are being cleared to make way for coal mining. The university of New South Wales have invested 1 Million dollars into Whitehaven Coal (the mining company controlling the operation). However, when you look at the shareholders you can see that 1 million dollars is almost nothing. http://au.investsmart.com.au/shares/asx/Whitehaven-Coal-WHC.asp

Deforestation is a serious issue affecting the world and many animals are loosing their habitats. Not only is the government allowing the clearing of forests for coal mining but they approved the Carmichael mega mine (operated by the Adani Group) on the edge of the Barrier Reef which is a natural world heritage site. They did this despite hundreds of thousands of Australians (including myself) taking action to try to stop the Carmichael mine. http://www.greenpeace.org/australia/en/news/climate/Top-10-reasons-why-Carmichael-mega-mine-is-a-REALLY-bad-idea/

The Australian government is refusing to take the environment seriously as coal mining is a large part of the economy. Coal is a non-renewable resource that contributes to large amount of unnecessary CO2 emissions. This contributes to global warming, climate change and rising sea levels. Yay! They have of course done this because they care more for money then they do for nature (opinion). They could be investing in renewable energy, but instead they continue to mine coal and it is used to produce 85% of Australia's energy as well as exporting it to countries like China to make billions.

I thought they do it because the Greens oppose nuclear power more strongly than they do coal?

It's all about money. Money buys votes in government, or pays to convince the public that it's a
good thing.
