Finally!! Today should not be a day of hate!! It should not be mentioned on this day in the news. 49 years in the making, and now it's no longer a fight!!
The loveliest day I ever had, was the day when tomorrow never came.

I'm not hating on anybody, but I don't really give a damn! I could care less, I'm neutral on these matters, not for it or against it, do whatever you want I'm fine with it. :)

It may be nothing special to you yet, but it might be one day. :) And it's definitely special to a lot of homosexual couples, even if it isn't to you personally.

It's certainly special to me !

Aside, all the Supreme Court decisions that transpired this week made me feel like the United States is progressing again in being a more civilized country.

I'm excited and so happy that the US finally did the right thing! :D I even wore my rainbow suspenders to work yesterday to celebrate.

That said, I'm reminded of one thing a professor I really respected told me once, "For some lgbtq people, the ability to get married is not their definition of equality." This means that just because now anyone can get married, it doesn't mean hate for these people is over.

It's a great day, ripe for celebration, but America can still do better! :)

While this has been a significant and decisive milestone for gay rights, it looks like there will still be quite a bit more conflict over upholding the spirit of this court decision.  In the eyes of some, the federal mandate that gay marriage be legal and recognized does not (immediately) preclude individual states or their citizens from making the availability of gay marriage resources as scarce as possible (see this for an analogous case regarding abortion).  In fact, some counties and states are considering (or are already doing) exactly that.

The recognition of rights of minority groups involves a process of both legal and social change, and historically, the legal recognition on similar issues of minority rights has come when society has only partially come to accept those rights.  While the court ruling was progress, there's still a ways to go.

It was good to see the supreme court make a decision that wasn't based on
religious beliefs. After all the constitution of the U.S. was written to not have a
state religion.

I am a heterosexual, but that's my personal feelings and shouldn't be pushed
on others who feel differently.

I listened to politicians on the news saying the words that it's the law now, but
you could hear in their voices that some didn't liked it at all.  I am sure our homosexual
friends will still have to deal with those who don't like it. Laws are only words unless
they are obeyed. I wish the best for you all..

The fact that they are willing to stop issuing marriage licenses all together in order to avoid giving them to gay couples shows that, despite the claims, it isn't about protecting "tradition marriage".  I don't think it ever has been.   This really strikes me as a sort of temper tantrum move: "if we can't do it my way, then nobody get to do it at all".
*sighs*

At least this court decision is a step in the right direction. But yeah, there is still a long way to go.

Yeah. Totally feels like a temper tantrum.

I just don't understand why. Why is it so important for them to make sure that gays never marry?

Some people are never comfortable with change. They will find any
excuse to keep things the way they want.

Then there are those who feel they are obliged to force others to follow
their own beliefs. It's sad but many wars have been faught over this
reason alone.

I guess I'm leaning over to the more "For It side" instead of neutral, I really thought it over and I want rights for everybody no matter what. My cousin Jason is gay, I support him all the way, and I'm super excited for him! :) :) :)

I'm not overly fond of marriage as a custom, but legal sanction is an important tipping point for cultural acceptance of gays. Many equate legality with morality on the basis that laws are written to enforce good behavior, and take it on faith that there must be good reasons for their existence. To these people morality is merely an issue of consensus.

Intolerance has an easy enough explanation, humans desire community. Achieving it is a matter of reducing dissonance between individuals and collectives. Some people change themselves to fit in. Some value individuality too highly and change for no one, valuing a mutual respect of differences and core values over unity. The problem stems from those who try to create solidarity by changing others. Rather than adapting these people would rather that the entire world molds itself around them, a bit like the proverb in which a man moves a mountain instead of walking around it.

To these people, gays threaten them by changing society in ways that make it inhospitable to them, and it's infringing their basic human right to belong. In a peculiar way I sympathize. It's not just or responsible, but I can see why they feel that way. Nevertheless, the "freedom" to oppress others on grounds of religious liberty is indefensible. Tyranny over others is not a human right, it is a negation of rights. Laws enabling this practice are inimical to a free society and ought to be struck from the book.

I think gays have a bright future in the US. However... I worry how an increasingly marginalized conservative culture will respond to this. I don't think it's unreasonable to conclude that will we see a rise in right-wing extremism over it. The divide between the bible belt and the rest of the US grows larger each day. If socio-political conditions favor it, we might see the rise of homegrown fundamentalist terrorism in the south. A Christian analogue to the IS, in other words. Imitators will always follow.
