Republic of Ireland legalises gay marriage
« on: May 24, 2015, 09:07:57 am »
Ireland becomes the first country in the world to legalise gay marriage through a popular vote.

More than 62% voted in favour - 1,201,607 people voted yes, while 734,300 voted no. All but one constituency voted yes.

While civil partnerships have been legal since 2010, gay couples will now be able to get married and have the same rights as heterosexual couples. Marriage is protected by the Irish constitution, while civil partnerships are not. This right will only be able to be removed via another popular vote.

This vote marks a turning point in a country once dominated by the Catholic church.

It's nice to see, I hope this trend continues in other countries.

I am not gay, but I  feel those who are should have the same rights as me.

I say this. But of course if you're all for gays having the same rights then they start calling you gay. people are so simple minded.

remind me of the funny thing about California, where gay marriage was voted by the state rather than popular vote (even tho where i am is seen as one of the most liberal states)

Hopefully one day homosexuals will gain enough respect that the labels can go away, but I imagine
there will always be those who fear/hate change, and look for any excuse to use them. Even for
those who promote or agree with such changes.

I feel that sometimes the people who say "oh he's so gay because he wears such and such etc" don't know that it doesn't make sense. instead of calling it gay call it something else. Gay isn't a synonym for bad.

Here has a list.

Worth noting that same-sex marriage is NOT legal in Northern Ireland, ONLY in the Republic. See here for more on that.

That's really silly that only Northern Ireland doesn't allow same-sex marriage. Many of my friends living there are very disappointed by that. I hope that will change soon.

But I agree with all underneath me . Being gay shouldn't be viewed as a negative . And people should stop using the word gay for everything , like "That wall is so gay" . No, the wall is not gay .

I'm so happy for the Republic of Ireland though  :D . The country in which I grew up in!

Now, who wanted to move here? >.>  . Psst, I have a spare bed  ;)
