Scottish independence
« on: September 10, 2014, 01:20:07 pm »
Nobody's mentioned this?

On September 18th (8 days), Scotland will be holding a referendum on whether the country should leave the United Kingdom and become an independent sovereign state.

Thoughts?

    I haven't really focused on it much, more put it to the back of my head and waited, but I do have many many thoughts and sides of the debate, more than I could write without going over some form of limit, however a few are that;
    • Independence is the wrong word to me, it wouldn't be so much independence, more of a breakaway into a much less sustainable state
    • It could cause major problems in whether they would be part of the European Union or not
    • It could very easily result in a rather volatile bit of confusion in terms of currency
    • There would be significantly less things to act as a source of income for the Scottish economy
    • Mr Salmond would "coincidentally" benefit greatly from the split
    • Sometimes it really feels to me like it's largely fuelled by nationalism, which breeds racism/hatred towards the rest of the U.K. more specifically Great Britain, which is pretty disheartening.

    Sorry if this is a bit too simple or confusing by the way, I've been working nights all week, and I'm not in much of a state to concentrate well, or write a large amount. Also, If anyone feels very strongly about this, please stay calm and think etc, before you quote my post, I've had far too many politically based arguments to long for any more anytime soon, plus I'm not particularly in the mood to argue.

    I'm sure people have heard of it but most people in North America don't have any real insight on the issues or how people there feel. Nothing on the news anout it.

    Thoughts?

    I would suspect that alot of the issues are those caused by the EU.

    Well, today was poll day (yesterday, technically, it's 2AM) and it's looking like Scotland hasn't ragequit the UK. Barely. Exit polls are putting the results at ~46% Yes (Become an independent nation)/54% no (Remain a part of the UK), but the actual results will be coming out over the next 10 hours or so.

    They were permitting 16-year-old voters. That may have motivated the more seasoned voters to get to the polls in greater numbers. The pro-independence faction was even using Obama-type slogans and campaign tactics.
