U.S. Government Shutdown
« on: October 01, 2013, 01:05:40 am »
Good news, everyone! The U.S. government has finally gotten serious about cutting spending, by... failing to pass a new budget before the previous one expired, meaning the federal government is no longer able to continue spending any taxpayers' money. All non-essential federal employees are suspended without pay, and all essential federal employees will have their pay withheld indefinitely. Non-essential public services such as national parks, libraries, museums, etc will all be closed.

Oh wait, that's not good news at all. At least not if you're American.

I really just don't know what the US is trying to do anymore. What is it that they hope to achieve from this?

Much ado about noting but I do fault the GOP , they are wasting political capital  on opposition of Obamacare by a very vain campaign, as much as I oppose we just do not have the votes. We need to wait thing out and use it  a issue in 2014 and 2016.  We need the Senate and  White House  first. It see the Republican Party is good at giving a bad president a way out from his folly.  It why I left the GOP

The president had three years to set things up and misinformation is still rampant.  That is his problem.

The GOP got the sequester continued into FY 14 without an argument.  They won have pushed their luck too far by trying to stop/delay/slow the introduction of a law they failed repeatedly to repeal - though they did get the public option and a few other measures removed back when it was passed.

The lack of a CR is dangerous enough, but if this goes for three weeks, the debt ceiling will be added to the pot.

There is a significant quantity of GOP reps who were elected on the platform of rolling back the Fed to just after the first Congress met.  This is victory for them.  Many in the party fear what the ACA will do to their careers and their party.  They have nothing to lose.  Many of the rest have been swept up and dare not oppose their party for fear of it turning against them and them losing their positions of power.  They have nothing to gain.

On the D side, the ACA is the Hail Mary pass, their gambit that could leave them with all three branches under control indefinitely.  They have everything to lose now and to gain in future.  The president has been called weak too often by the opposition to back down now.  Even an impeachment could help him because it means he gets another platform from which to denounce his opponents.  He cannot personally lose anything and he stands to gain great acclaim should this work.

This stopped being about issues awhile ago.  Now it's about who comes out of the burning building holding the kitten and who emerges with a pack of cigarettes and a guilty expression.

The worst congress EVER. In the history of this country there has never been a more worthless group of trash representing the American people. We Americans are nothing more than pons to the worst power mad government in our history. They have proven repeatedly they will do nothing but fight each other. Get rid of ALL of them. VOTE. if old enough VOTE!

We've become a joke. America deserves better than this.

The saddest thing is.... this is true. too true.

Should nothing get done, should we remain without a government, what will happen? Will anarchy ensue? How will they Finally solve this problem without passing a law stating that the united states owes no money save to foreign nations and businesses? What is going to happen.

This has nothing to do with Obama (for once). The Congress can NEVER agree on a new budget before their time is up... At least this year the military is getting paid on time... But this keeps happening year after year... Unless there are some radical changes it will keep happening. It's absolute BS

Oh? I apologize for offering my opinion. I find your bit of humor there rather offensive.

And mylo, if no one runs the system, how long before it breaks down? If no one runs the government, how long before we begin  to cause chaos? It may take while, but still.

You still have a government, silly. They just don't get paid and can't spend your tax dollars. The only programs that are still funded are those that receive said funds from a government mandate as opposed to the federal budget, e.g. Social Security.

But even those can't be funded forever, thanks to the debt ceiling crisis. If nothing is done, the U.S. will hit the debt ceiling on October 17 and run out of money about a week later, at which point the government will be unable to pay any entitlements, and worse, it will default on the Treasury bond interest payment on October 31. There are a number of ways Obama can avert the crisis without the support of Congress, but they all have the slight disadvantage of being totally illegal. If Congress doesn't get its act together real soon, America is doomed.

The Congress can NEVER agree on a new budget before their time is up... At least this year the military is getting paid on time... But this keeps happening year after year... Unless there are some radical changes it will keep happening. It's absolute BS
Actually, Congress almost always manages to come to an agreement at the last moment. The last time a shutdown happened was 1995.

It doesn't break down, because this has happened 17 times since 1977.  I just think it would be better to try and fix the government rather than go into anarchy.  I mean, if we had gone into anarchy before, say 1980, we probably wouldn't be talking to each other right now due to technological development in the US essentially ceasing.

Neither do I. Long story short, the Republicans refused to pass the federal budget unless Obamacare was delayed or reformed, and apparently would rather shut down the government than introduce Obamacare. Except for one tiny problem: Obamacare is one of the programs that gets its funding from a mandate instead of the federal budget, and so it went into effect on schedule despite the shutdown. So now America has Obamacare and a government shutdown. I'm not really sure how the Republicans thought their plan was supposed to work. Are they going to just maintain the shutdown until Obamacare is repealed? Because that's not going to end well.

I really like America's plan actually.  Just spend more and more money until people forget that you're in debt in the first place. That's just good politics right there.  x_x

If Romney was in office, I would buy myself a passport and move to Canada. No joke. I would literally move to Canada if Romney was president.

same here. If Romney was elected, he would have completely ended equality for this country, forcing LEGALLY MARRIED gay couples to divorce. I'd totally move right to Vancouver until he was gone. that's why I voted for Obama. but I'm kind of regretting that, now. should have just not voted at all

Too much politics and not enough action. Those in congress
are supposed to be there to decide what is best for the
country, not trying to get re-elected.

If those in congress don't want public health care, why don't
they vote to stop their own government paid health care?

As is, health care costs have been growing faster than inflation
for many years. If we don't find a way to reduce costs. The only
people who can get decent health care in the future will be the
rich.

It always seems odd that the medical community complains about
not having enough money, but they still manage to build fancy offices
and hospitals that cost millions.

Perhaps they need to be audited.

wished my SS teacher last year was better D: last year was when we were learning about all this political stuff. so far the only things i know about government is that republicans try to take care of the rich and democrats try to treat ever one the same. well at least thats what i heard
