So i finally got a new car.
« on: February 11, 2012, 09:03:16 pm »
The car i've been driving for the past year and a half (a volvo) has turned into something of a deathtrap. The tires are balding, the speedometer only works when the turn signal is on, the headlight housing keeps filling with water (i fixed that with duct tape) and the outside handle on the driver's side door simply dislodged when i checked to make sure the door was locked... The handle and the housing is sitting in the passenger seat. The door no-longer latches at all, and flies open during right hand turns so i'm having to roll both the driver's side doors down and wrap a bungie chord around the middle to keep it shut. The check engine light has been on for 3 months, and there's another light that's come on that i can't read because a large spider has crawled into the glass and died right in front of it.

With this car's electrical system i'm not even confidant the airbag would deploy; which is a really bad thing given how likely a crash would seem to be.

My parents originally got the car because my brother severed his achilles tendon at OCS with the marines and needed a reliable way to get to the hospital. They payed 1000 for it and figured it would last a year, then they intended to use California's cash for clunkers program which uses tax payer dollars to buy near worthless assets (any car that fails smog) and get their 1000 back. Unfortunately the stupid thing has a better rating for emissions than any car anyone in my family has ever owned. it's been a good 2 and a half years sense then. He crashed it twice in one year, then moved to Texas and it became, "mine." it was supposed to have been for both of us anyhow... It hasn't been crashed in the 1.5 i've been driving it.

Call me lavish, but the volvo was no longer a practical and / or sane option.

After countless hours of scowering craigslist and several people attempting to scam me (one car had about 100k miles missing from the speedometer that showed in the carfax ;) ) i got a 1998 audi A4 today,  payed and done.  Old one is going to a local shepherd rescue.

If by fun you mean terrifying and well founded fear of the door falling off whilst on the highway;  well.   uh.  No.   0.o

kinda glad that's done with.   ^.^

Also,   as it is common practice for young adults in my mother's side of the family to give their cars names (my cousin's car,  he named, "Angie,") i've been jokingly refering to the Volvo as, "Helga."

Helga it is.  Congrats on the upgrade!  So you don't have any loans on the new car? That's pretty impressive.  I don't think anybody should go into debt over something like a car.

I've got a '98 mazda that's seen so many repairs and has so many quirky behaviors, it's almost like it's demon-possessed.  I just call it the Devil Car.

I had a friend who had a mid-90's Camry that he named Doris. He had to replace her after she overheated and caught fire while he was driving it down the highway.

But yeah, nice upgrade.

Aye.  I'm terrified of debt,  even if it's starting to become a nessisary evil just to get through school.  The reason i drove, *cough,* "Helga," for a year and a half was to save up for a new "used," car.  It was about 6k with registration factored in.

For my BS i've been going to community college for the first two years because it's far cheaper.  But i'm also saving so that i can stay out of debt for that as well.  After i get the BS going into debt may be unavoidable to continue education,  but we'll see.
