Sea Turtles (In The Words of a Non-Poet)
« on: February 27, 2010, 04:15:44 am »
Hell, why not.

I wrote a poem about death,
I wrote a poem about how I was afraid of death,
afraid of its steely cold and surgical tendrils,
reaching, creeping, seeping pale,
and one day reaching out to grab me,
wraiths, enveloping, thickening, suffocating,
pulling forth every last inch of breath and
leaving me limp, lifeless, an inconsequential mass on a hospital bed,
affairs to be arranged and
mourning to be feigned.

I wrote a poem about life,
exuberant, fleeting, resonant,
(or dull, lackluster, and empty)
but always there, in every crack and crevice,
as inevitable as
death, and completely, utterly incomprehensible.

I wrote a poem about you,
whoever you are. Wherever you are. What color is your skin? Your eyes? Do you talk when you sleep? Burn easily in the sunlight? Is your frame fragile, your face gentle? Will you roll over in the middle of the night and
whisper sweet sincerities in my ear, your voice singing,
flying,
across every harmonious note?
Will you read Ginsberg? Bukowski? Wordsworth? Keats?
Will you put up with me when I talk in my sleep, when I
steal all the covers?
Who are you? Are you there? Can you hear me there? I hope you can hear me there. I wrote a poem about it. I wrote a poem about you and the gaps that would be left when you were gone, about the rain that would fall as we lay inside,
bodies intertwined.

I wrote a poem about the weather,
cold, moist, and windy, with the sun
buried under perpetual layers of fog,
about how the weatherman wakes up every morning to tell me lies,
false prophet, a true heathen, a sinner.

about the cold that would chill my spine,
the heat that would make me sweat.

I wrote a poem about sleep,
and all the things I'd dream,
all the things I'd see and feel and
imagine. I put this poem under my pillow and prayed to it at night,
hoping my prophecies would come true.

I wrote a poem about how disappointed I was when I dreamt about sea turtles instead.

This is one of the best poems I've seen here in quite a while.
