Who's willing to give me a hand...
« on: February 26, 2003, 03:36:06 pm »
Alright, I deleted the original message I posted here, as I was pretty fired up at the time, and as a result was cursing and allsorts.  So to cut it short, I'd like some help with doing poetry.  I have no idea what I'm doing.  Thanks for any help you can give.

ONe thing I try to remember is the ending words DO NOT always have to rhyme. Have you checked out the "Poetry Chat" on here? There are a lot of great examples. People chatting in rhyme.

I used to write poetry about 20 years ago and got side tracked. Now I am trying to get back into the swing of things and I am getting a hang of it again from the "Poetry Chat" section here on Furtopia.

Any time you need a hand im on AIM if you catch me on and my e-mail address is shadow_wolf@talk21.com   . If you need just a bit of advice I don't know what I can do for you ( im not too good meself) but I have been told I can inspire and kindle the imagination. The hardest thing I find is I have the idea but I just use far too many words too explain it buut if you have too just go with the flow. I kind of like poems that rhyme in the odvious way but there are loads of diffrent styles too try. The best thing is get down too the library and book out a load of poem books. Take a day too yourself sit down read and be inspired a good bit of music helps I found. that and a Thesaurus I would be lost witho-out one.
Oh one last thing carry around a little pad n pen you be surprised when insperation strikes. ( usualy in the bath so my work end up running all over the place anyway   '<img'>    )
Just stay calm be relaxed dont force yourself too think, just sit back in some peace and quiet and let your imagination guide you. GOOD LUCK N DON'T GET DISCOUREDGED.

Thanks for all your offers of help.  I've added those who gave contact details to my IM lists, and I hope to speak with you soon.  It's just I'd really like to be able to do poetry, but I know nothing about it, and so I don't know what qualifies as poetry, and what doesn't.  When I was speaking to someone about it a while ago, they said it was a form of expressing yourself in words - but I've found it isn't as easy as that, because you need to make it sound poetic; because right now as I'm typing this, I am expressing myself, and I doubt this is poetry.  See my thinking?  Thanks once again for your offers of help.

Poetry has many forms. Some times it can be short and sweet, while at others it can pull on like Geoffrey Chaucer.
Rythm, ryhme, and ryhme scheme are not all important.

As I have learned there is no real formula for a poem. Don't concentrate on ryhme scheme if you don't want to use one.
Just write down your feelings. They don't have to make sense from one line to another.

Many poets, like me, need the basis of a strong emotion to write effectively. Others need quite and solitude to do some inner searching. Still others may need action around them, these go to public places and watch traffic and/or people.
Life? Ha, the greatest joke. Tis surely proof that God has a sense of humor, all be it a sadistic one.

Just thought I'd put in two cents for what its worth (probably about 2 cents).

One of my favorite parts of poetry is not the rhyme, but the language. Because there's not very many, you have to make every word in a poem carry a lot of weight. With a story you can explain a sloppy sentance in the next paragraph. With poetry, every phrase is important. That often means using familiar images with deep feelings behind them. For example: "a mote in the eye of God". How many things could that describe and how much literary meaning is behind that one simple phrase? So if you want my advice, work on the language and the poetry will follow.
