Pencil Crayons/Colored Pencils

Very well done, Sumarra. Especially the eyes, again! (giggles)

I do have one question, what are "pencil crayons"?

Sumarra Wrote:

Thanks, Kada. Yeah, the eyes are everything in a pic sometimes.

<sighs>    I get asked this so much that I should just give in and call them Prisma Colors. The only reason I don't is because they aren't that Brand of Pencil Crayons. They're Berol Canadiana. But basically it's Prisma Colors. Same as what I used on Sea Dragon.

..... <tired kitty trying to stay awake on her work shift>

I know what pencil crayons are.  I didn't realise that they were the same as "Prisma Colours", which I have heard so many times.  So prisma colours are just another word for pencil crayons.  Thanks for clearing that up for me.

It's a nice picture, Sumarra.  The colouring is quite nice.  Sorry I can't say much about it, but I'm more used to the male anatomy.  Good work.

Thanks Drak. Next new project I start I'll see about drawing some sexy males, hehe.

Prisma Colors aren't just 'pencil crayons' they're actually a popular brand name because they are pretty much the leading line of that product. They are very well made and have good colors.

I did a comparison with them and my Berols and both had pros and cons. The big pro for mine were that they are over a decade old and still work great where Prismas I hear start crumbling after 5 years.

Ah, I see.  I think we have Berols here.  Crayola, too.  I'm not an artist, so I don't really know the names of the professional stuff.  Anyway, don't feel you have to draw some sexy males just for me.  I mean, I won't argue about it - in fact, I'd really like it.  I just can't really offer much constructive comments on female pictures, that's all.  I look forward to seeing more art soon.

Ah, ok. I think what confused me is you calling them 'crayons'. To me, crayons are those big fat coloring crayons I used as a kid. (giggles) I use the Prisma colored pencils. And yes, Prisma is the brand name. At FC a few years back I had asked some of the artists what medium they used and they would reply, "Prisma colored pencils." WS swears by them too. He doesn't use them but just knows what the artists have told him through the years about them and he got me a set last year off E-Bay. I am getting more used to them as you can see with my latest 6 colored pieces that I posted last night on my forum.

I find them to be some what of a soft lead and sometimes this is a downfall as the 'points' break every now and again and I have to resharpen them to keep the points for coloring.

I have tried something they call a 'blender' for the pencils that some artists have suggested using for blending the pencils but didn't like it. (I love the ability of blending of the chalks.) On one of the pics I did in this last theme I found that using just a lighter color blended the other colors better than the 'blending' tool. The 'blending' tool is just rolled up paper of some sort. They are very cheap to purchase but I know other artists who swear by them.

I truly love how your Sea Dragon turned out, Sumarra!

I just bought a blender before doing Sea Dragon too and what I bought was a wax-type pencil. I didn't see anything that looked like rolled up paper called 'a blender' at the art store.

What I didn't like about it was the build-up it would leave on the paper if I wanted an extremely smooth color. And doing plain backgrounds with it is far too time consuming.

I wonder if the blender you have isn't meant for a different medium than colored pencils? And if you can't find the wax kind, I could send one along with the package to WS for you.

Probably because it is wax? I know the Oil Pastels I use can do the same thing. Also, with the Oil Pastels, I have found when trying to 'blend' them it really takes a lot of the pastel off. So one has to be careful working with them.

You may be right that the 'blender' I have is for something other than the pencils. Something to work on to figure out I suppose!  '<img'>

Umm, not to be funny or anything, but aren't those Prisma Colors that you're using just colored pencils?  I think they say "Pencil Crayons" on the box because it's bilingual:  for "crayon" means "pencil" in French..  ^^;;;;;;;;; ''

And I forgot to say... that dragon is groovetacular.  =^_^=
I like sea-borne creatures like that.   I never had a whole lot of success with them, but it's something I've been messing with off and on.   This inspires me to finish my mer-dude( s ).

I got the box to read it. No. It says
Quote
Professional Quality Soft thick Lead Pencils

Under that it says:
Quote
Crayons de Qualite Professionelle a Mine Douce

Under that it says:
Quote
Lapices De Calidad Profesional De Mina Suave

Of course, I don't understand the last two since I only speak English.  '<img'>

Does that help? I know they are soft leads because if I sharpen them too much, the tips keep breaking off. '<img'>

Nya, yep.  They are just colored pencils.  Crayon is French for Pencil.  Lapiz (plural lapices) is Spanish for pencil.  Hehe...  Sorry for disturbance.. carry on.   ^^;;;   ''

Speaking of actual wax crayons, though... I bought a 100 pack of crayola crayons yesterday... Lemme tell ya, if you haven't used 'em since you were a kid, they are mad confusing/surprising now!  Hahaha.  All the names are WEIRD...   '<img'>

You are not a 'disturbance'. You had a legitimate question. How can that be disturbing? '<img'>

Color something for us and post it on your forum for all to see how the crayons work?

heh, I bet real crayons can blend well with a rolled-up paper type blender though. Wax would just sit on top... so I'm guessing... <eyes her son's crayons now with curiosity> .. they might be a good way to do quick backgrounds.  ':p'

Don't worry about disturbing, Kattywampus. It was helpful, and I always appreciate input. Thanks for the compliment on my dragon.  '<img'>

(ROFL) Go for it! Satisfy your curiosity and then tell us what you think? I might just go buy some for myself and see what I think too!

I will try that paper blender and see what happens and let you all know as well.

Using a paper tool for blending color pencil drawings? I tried that once and it was frustrating at best, I muchly prefer the wax pencil blender. Plus, the paper makes an awful sound when it blends. *shudders*

I need a set of Prismas. Or of the kind Sumarra uses. Or I could steal Sumarra's set.

..... oopsy, did I say that out loud?  '<img'>

(giggles) I didn't hear a thing HeartOfSilver. Welcome to our forums!

I am finding that my latest works are ALL Prisma pencils. I have found a way to blend my colors now without the 'tool'. I also don't like the paper blender either.

Hiya Silver! Glad to see you made it to my forum. And you can borrow my colored pencils anytime we're togther... we really should get another local art jam going. it was so much fun last time!

Kada: I haven't had much time for my art lately, so I haven't tried out the crayon idea yet. But one thing I am working on is improving on what I've done before. Using watercolors first then colored pencils on top for textures like fur.
I like how the watercolors provide a smooth base for color and basic shading, when the colored pencils become arduous trying to do that. Then where watercolors get frustrating, the pencils are easy to use for textures. The paint blends too quickly and gets absorbed by the canvas, otherwise.

Next is trying to find more ways of making it look 'real'.

Since I have been using only the pencils, I have found that using a light body base colored pencil, like you using the water colors, and then using the pencils for the detail. I also use the same light colored base color for going over the entire piece (where that color was used) to smooth the shading etc all together and it seems to be working quite well.

I'm still trying to do the same thing! Man, other artists make fur look so easy to create on their artwork!

Oh on that ancient subject of crayons, I can tell you that ages ago, I remember using a wad of paper as a blender, and it worked.  So thanks for that reminder, cuzzin.  Also, these new crayons aren't so waxy anymore...
I plan on using these crayons a lot more than I had to already, just to get the $5's worth!  Hehe, y'all should come down sometime and we can all play with crayons. =^_~=

Hey, I heard a rumor that Berol Canadiana pencil crayons became Prisma Colors. Is this true? Anyone know?
