Do you have a mechanical keyboard?
« on: May 03, 2011, 02:47:46 am »
I just got the Daskeyboard Ultimate Silent  (i'm not the only one living in my house.)

I'm quite pleased with it.  It's really nice to type on, and i'm finally learning to touch-type.   (I've been using computers sense i was about 3 or 4 so i learned to somehow compensate and keep up a decent speed despite that fact.   Just wasn't a skill i ever got around to learning.)

It's my first mechanical keyboard ever because back when used to use desktops i was two young to care,  and i started using laptops for the longest time so i have been using really crappy keyboards ever sense. So yeah,  now that i have a desktop again i thought that i'd invest in a nice one.

How about y'all?  Any clicky keyboard users out there?

I'm using an old Honeywell Model M clone, although I plan on getting a Das Keyboard soon. Clicky keyboards are awesome.

Buckling spring keyboards are LOUD but very fun to type on.  I know someone who's planning on getting one soon.  Some people really like them.

Okay, I'll bite. What's the big deal about mechanical keyboards? I understand the difference between the two, I think. Mechanical uses metal in the form of a spring (or some sort of spring like device) while non-mechanical uses methods similar to a T.V. remote. However, I don't see what advantage that gives me. Surely a piece of metal would be more difficult to press down on than a piece of rubber, and I've never been "fatigued" from typing on a keyboard too long, and I've never though to myself, "Gee, I sure wish I didn't have to press this key down a whole three millimeters"

But I'm not going to be completely turned off by the idea. I do a lot of typing, so if there's anything that can make it easier, I'll look into it. What advantages do mechanical keyboards present?

I simply don't see the additional cost as being big enough to justify not getting more processing power instead, but then again, I place a very high emphasis on processing power (yay for rendering).

The big advantage is tactile and auditory feedback. With mechanical keyboard you can feel exactly what's going on under your fingers, and you get a good solid THUNK every time you press a key. Have you ever thought you pressed a key but it didn't register because you weren't pressing hard enough? Or pressed a key accidentally because you were leaning on it too hard? I guarantee you will never have these problems with a mechanical keyboard.

I simply don't see the additional cost as being big enough to justify not getting more processing power instead, but then again, I place a very high emphasis on processing power (yay for rendering).
What about the additional cost of replacing cheap keyboards all the time because they break so easily? The main reason I haven't bought a Das Keyboard yet is because my old keyboard still works after all these years.

It's actually far easier to type on,  and requires a lot less force because you're not, "bottoming out."  You don't have to push the key all the way down for it to register,  it happens midway,  so you're never going to be hitting the keys so hard you're pushing hard plastic down against hard plastic.

And foxpup is right on the cost aspect as well,  i don't think i'll be replacing this keyboard in a long time,  but i got it in the first place after two of my keyboards broke in a row.  What a pain.  >.>

My big thing is,  buy high quality once,  instead of continuing to buy crap quality over,  and over,  and over again...  May cost the same,  or even be cheaper in the long run,  and in the mean time you have something nicer and higher quality.

Actually I have not had to spend any on replacing cheap keyboards. >.>

I don't think I've had any of my keyboards break... still, I'll look into it.
