Headphones / Headsets / Earbuds
« on: September 13, 2010, 05:36:33 pm »
I just switched laptops,  the old laptop's sound-card was horrid so i was always using a pair of USB headphones which were loud and had drastically improved sound quality.  Well,  the usb headphones died right about the same time i switched laptops,   to i thought i'd do a bit of research and get a pair of regular headphones.

I just got my headphones in the mail today, Grado sr60i,  and i've been having a blast.  The sound quality is amazing by my standards and worth every penny.    \^.^/   !!!!!

I can't say i know much about the technical specs of sound for headphones,  but i know what i like,  i can tell the difference by ear, and i know what i can not stand (ear-buds of any kind,  for example.)

This does,  however,  mean i'll be using my PC's built in mic for gaming now...   :P

What do you guys use?   What is your preference?

I use a cheapish set of Sennheiser HD205s, or a better pair of Sennheiser CX6s when I do use headphones. But generally, I use my mixed and matched Celestion DL6 pair, single DL8 and some JVC speaker from the 70s. They actually work REALLY well together. I LOVE teh CX6s.

Alsek: Why can't you stand in ear buds?

As long as they sound nice, I'm open to any of them  ;).

Given the choice, probably the squishy type of in-ear ones, for best outside noise reduction.

@ McMagic,  i've typically had bad experiences sound wise with inear/earbuds,  so it's more personal than logical.  I also have small ears and have a hard time getting them to stay in my ears...  They pull out so easily  D:

Going to try using these headphones later for gaming...  should be fun.

As I mentioned in another headphone thread, I love my Sony MDR-V600's. They're true DJ headphones (as opposed to "dj style") with nice big drivers that really pump the bass when I need them to, not to mention really comfortable to wear. I would use them for anything needing headphones.

I've tried earbuds before, and they always left a lot to be desired. I've heard they've made great strides in sound quality, but I'm sorry, you can't get the same kind of frequency and bass response out of something that small as you can with a quality set of regular headphones. Even if they did, I have never found an ear bud anything that fit me well without hurting after a few minutes of use. So everything else being equal, I'm sticking with the cans. ;)

the in-ear buds feel great, but tend to have bad sound
the normal (hard) ear buds have much nicer sound, but... they /hurt/!

All I have is a set of low quality earbuds that havent broken on me yet. Id like to get a nice set of headphones so I can listen to my Ipod without the earbuds flying out.

I have a pair of Gamecon Plantronics
I've had them for a good 2 years, really comfortable to wear, sometimes I forget that I have them on
the sound on them is amazing,

"Open-ear design keeps you connected to the game and your surroundings"

that's actually a great feature, if you don't have them full blast or nothing playing
you can hear the phone or talk to someone without taking them off to hear them
properly. where earbuds or some other headsets I've had you can't hear anything
unless you take them off.

I never really liked earbuds, they hurt my ears after a few minutes of wearing them
or they get sweaty and fall out, and I'm not much of a sweater,

I'd much rather have a good set of headphones

Frankie,  I have that same pair.  They are very good, though mine are still new enough to be a bit tight on the sides of my head.

As far as earbuds go, I never liked them because they don't stay in my ears!

after 2+ years of constant use, I've never used the sound on my laptops cause it sucked really bad,
and never got speakers when I built my desktop, cause I like them soo much. So there's loads of use
they still feel like I just got them, My stuff is very well taken care of. The one thing I've been noticing over the past
few weeks is that the plastic is starting to stress out, not sure how to describe the sound, but it sounds like the
plastic is starting to crack/break.  I'll most likely end up buying a new pair though, unless I find something
that looks cool, and has great sound quality.

Earbuds are a good source for rare earth magnets. When your earbuds become damaged/unuseable, then take them apart and pry out the magnets.

what can these magnets be used for?
