SecretHelper Firefox Extention
« on: January 12, 2011, 03:17:53 am »
I just saw an ad for this on the DownloadHelper site. Is looks like a scam, sounds like a scam, and smells like a scam. Is it a scam? They won't say what encryption algorithm it uses (which is always a bad sign and may even be illegal*), but they do admit that "it won't resist a police investigation." And they want me to pay 30 bucks for it. Considering there are several free products available that will resist a police investigation, they must think I'm an idiot or something. The whole thing sounds dodgy, but I'm not sure if it's a deliberate scam or just a regular lousy product. Does anyone have any ideas?

* Information about the encryption algorithm is sometimes necessary for Customs declarations (yes, software downloaded from an overseas server is subject to Customs restrictions, and you're supposed to declare certain types of "restricted" software, as ridiculous as that may seem).

If there's a better free alternative then I don't see a point in this. They must offer something else to charge people =X

That's just the thing... they don't offer anything else. Or if they do, they don't advertise it very well. I'd ask them about it, but I'd like to know whether or not it's a scam before I hand over my email address...

Um, they're charging money for something that everyone else is giving away for free, and they admit it doesn't work as well or at all... that doesn't sound too good to me. What's the accepted wisdom on deals that are too bad to be true?

I figured that much out for myself, thanks. What I want to know is whether it's a scam or just a lousy product. This will affect how and who to I complain about it. Normally I'd just ignore something like this, but since DownloadHelper is only the second most popular Firefox addon, I feel I should do something about it before something bad happens.

When I want to hear more about some product, I just google "X Sucks" where 'x' is the product.  If it really does suck, you find out fast :3  I imagine the same would work with keywords like 'virus', 'trojan', or 'spyware'.

I just get a bunch of links to, uh, download it... ¬.¬ There strangely doesn't seem to be any information about it one way or the other...

I did find some reviews on the extension.  It is definitely not a good extension (both with respect to other extensions and in general), and it does involve some negligence (potential profile nuking), but the reviews themselves don't indicate the presence of malware (though this doesn't eliminate the possibility).

...why did you link to the Mongolian site? Anyway, it's beginning to look less like a scam and more like someone trying to sell a lousy product to people who don't know any better. I'll start complaining at them, then at DownloadHelper if I don't like their response.

Well, I encountered both the US and the Mongolian site through Google (the latter was somewhere around page 7 of "secrethelper extension", whereas the former was on page 1 of the same, IIRC).  I must have linked the Mongolian site by mistake.
