I think its just something you know when you see that comes down to personal opinion. For example, I think this baby snake and this baby frog are cute, but I'm sure there are plenty that disagree. I'm pretty sure that everybody would think this little guy is cute though.

The snake and frog are just tiny... no smaller than "tiny".

But the turtle!  Reminds me of the kind you used to get at pet shops.  They were so tiny and cute.  Oddly there is something about (some) turtles that make them cute.  I really like Tuck on Wonder Pets.

I think big things can be cute too.  Godzilla? Well I don't find him cute but I guess I can see how some would. I think it is more in how the object/person/thing/whatever is presented. Give it big eyes, a smile and a kind look and it will be cute.  Slug, Snake or Zombie they can all be cute!

I don't think Godzilla himself would be considered cute, but in the Fox Kids cartoon from the 1990s, I would say he did some very cute things.

I'm starting to think there could be three factors as to what makes something cute.

1) Size.

This is easy enough to understand: the smaller something is, the more cute it is. In the case of the frog, snake and turtle, their cuteness is based entirely on the fact that they are so small.

2) Fuzzy.

Again, easy enough. The more cuddly something looks, the cuter it is.

3) Behavior.

This is what I mentioned above. Though something might not be considered cute in itself, it can do very cute things. In the case of Kyaa from Please Save My Earth, for example, whatever natural cuteness he had paled in comparison to what he and little Shion did together.

I guess any variation of the three could equate to cuteness.

I think deer, donkeys, horses, cows, and goats look cute.

Yeah, an equine would!

j/k

Cute can't be defined--you just know it when you see it, and each person is different.  Me, for example:

Puppies--I could take 'em or leave 'em
Kittens--Mind-meltingly cute, gimme gimme!  I want to pet it!
Foxes--well, not cute, just handsome/good-looking
Horses--Wha....?  Sorry, not even My Little Pony!
Babies--Not a huge fan, but that will prolly change if I ever have one of my own.

Heh horses are gorgeous but not cute.

Babies aren't cute either...not even if it were my one.  I think I'll be a horrid mother. ~hides~

And only some puppies are cute..

And of course...kitties are cute.  ^.^

Cuteness is...innocence that never meant anyone harm, that you just want to hug. Sort of.

Its hard to describe cute in words, I know that to me, something cute is usually small. People usually call me "cute", so I guess it also has to be huggable.

Cuteness is precisely:

An instinctual nurturing response to pedomorphy (juvenile characteristics)

...which may in the long run be one of the most interesting instincts we've got.

It's especially interesting because (like other mammals in fact), we tend to respond to it even across species.

Extended childhoods are really the thing that make our species what it is, and so you can see why we might have a heightened tendency to nurture children/juveniles.

That *same* tendency is almost certainly why everything, especially carnivora (cats adn dogs) that we've domesticated has been overwhelmingly selected for pedomorphic traits and *behavior*. Behavioral pedomorphy is exactly why animals are tamed, and it's not that hard to get. There's that famous experiment the Russians did with the arctic foxes; controlled breeding -> completely tame foxes in 5 generations.

Cuteness. It PWNZ JOO!

well I think "cute" can be a very broad thing... for my mate, I simply am his cutie, I have a cute, calm voice, I'm innocent and a bit shy, but at the same time, I'm open-minded and he knows how yiffy I am, even if I may not always show it... and for me, my mate is cute cause he's my protector, often worried about me, and can console me in such a sweet way... so I think everyone has to find his own definition

Cute can be a lot of things.

For example, a little girl with cat ears, dressed in a Victorian dress, but carrying a huge sword. That's adorable to me. Then again, I'm weird.

I dont find children cute at all. Kids are some of the most irritating and time consuming things ever, cute they are not, in my opinion.

At least in this culture, when people are confronted with something that's bred right down into our bones, like a sense of cuteness, of language, of sex, or of fairness-- instincts we evolved-- they inevitably focus on the little details or the specific examples that set them apart.

And then everybody congratulates each other for being different.

Meanwhile, everybody's got the same basic instncts for cuteness, fairness, language, and arousal. (well, okay, there're really more like two distinct patterns of the latter).

Well, in furry terms, 'cute' isn't the word I would use. For cats, yes. But for my favorites, there is another word used for them. I just can't think of it at the moment. ':p'

cute key * oot [adj]  the state of projecting an air of innocent and/or naive beauty, such as a child or small animal.  Examples: a newborn puppy; a small kitten; Ginny...

I'm pretty unusual in my definition of cute.  Babies creep me out, but I find this vulture, chibi Nosferatu, this zombie, and Diablo adorable.

Suprisingly, I hardly find anything cute. And when I do I just stand still making an "ah...." Sound and find it as a challenge.

Like once a kitten was playing next to a box, then it bumped into the box and it fell over on top of him, then he ran around in circles causing for the box to just move around on the floor to my vision, so I lifted the box up and he pounced onto my hand before looking up at me with the cutest expression.

If I pet and stoke people's pets and random animals I come across it's just because I like animals, not because I find them cute.
